Meniscus Tears — Repair vs Removal

Meniscus injury types, when to repair versus partial removal, and expected recovery.
The meniscus acts as a shock absorber in the knee. Tears are common in sports and degenerative knees.
## Symptoms
Pain on the joint line, swelling, locking, or inability to fully straighten the knee.
## Treatment
Whenever possible, we repair the meniscus to preserve long-term knee health. Partial meniscectomy is used when the tear pattern is not repairable.
## Recovery
Meniscus repair requires longer protection (4–6 weeks non-weight-bearing in some cases) compared to trimming (2–4 weeks).
